That Summer Afternoon

That scorching sun and it’s summer run
Bloated emotions of spring, lying undone
The moods set to slowly melt in melancholy
Like those trailing strands of the ornate lily

Streets around guarded by the canopies of bright flowering trees
The orange Gulmohars, Yellow Palaash, those pink, white Siris
Below it's dehydrated branches, rested these tired feet and red eyes
Of labours and travellers, walking for miles-on-foot,
Of beggars and the street shops owners selling a fruit
Of the incense and toy sellers, at every traffic light
Of their hopeless old women and the starving brides
Of a child unborn, waiting to share their plight
And the little ones with droopy and sunken little eyes

Not many shelters to save them from the auburn sun
Not enough stalls, for them to fetch some milk or bun
The tropical crowd was sweating it out,
The drops of saline, choking the shouts
The cops charging blows at them, beating them into a pulp
While we lay binging news of COVID Count, only to sulk

The unwanted, poor men and women
Of a city of course, not counting on them
That city with some elitists, wondering indoors
Complaining about the burden of household chores
Invariably uncertain of their lives, once t'is over
A nation under lockdown, unwilling to even care
Then came the trains plying to harass them every bit,
With nothing to address their thirst or the stomach pits

That summer afternoon and then, the many that followed
The society felt a hollow with endless lives it swallowed
That summer afternoon and the following nights that turned darker
I too felt abandoned, wondering if lives were really worth a barter.

In the post COVID era lauding our governments,
On the lifting of these crippling Lockdowns
Don't be surprised to witness the creation of
Less connected Villages, Cities and Towns.

The Hustling Malls Would Seem More Barren
The Elitists  Might Soon Appear As Tyrants
Sewages Would Soon Appear All Flooded
The Cleansing Of Nature May Soon Be Shattered

Sprawling Lawns Would No Longer Be Mowed
The Silent Streets Would Again Turn Loud
But This Time, What We Definitely Won't Have
Are Enough Hands To Service The Privileged Us
We Distantly  Allowed Them To Succumb Enough
With Empty Promises Of Meals, Trains or Home Bus

The Blind Eye We Turned,
To The Sufferings Of Weary and Miserable
Would Emulate Into The
Disenchantment For The City Consumables.

Skulduggery Would Become A Common Practice
Debauchery On The Rise, With Social Injustice
Open Societies That Showered Brutalities
Would Bear The Cost Of Their Own Penalties.

The Chirping Sound of Birds Will Eventually Fade
The Proposals Would Be Revisited For Global Trades
Masks Would Soon Become A Fashion Accessory
And Sanitisers Mandatory With The Travel Itinerary

We Can't Rule Out Reorganisation of Population Density
Food And Lifestyle Choices Might Observe Some Sanity
The Distances We Mapped Will Lie Exposed
Destination Weddings Would Be Disposed.

The Schools Will Witness The Class Divide
The Education Principles Might Have to Collide
The Progressive Liberals May Take a Stride
The Colonial and Regressive Will Miss the Ride

The War Strategies And Budgets,
Would See A Sharp Decline.
Profiteering In Health Supplies,
Will Be Adjudged A Crime.

Religious Paradigms Might Shift In Time
Extremist Faiths Will Need To Sublime
The Flamboyance Would No Longer Fetch A Dime
Conservation Of Resources Shall Stay, This Time.

Our Identities Would Be COVID Negative or Positive
Religion, Geographies Or Caste Won't Be Imperative.

And While We are Preparing To,
Resume A Normal Life
All We Might Be Headed For,
Could Be A Colossal Suicide

B'coz Nobody Can Be Protected
Unless Everyone Is Included
The Homeless, Stateless, In Prisons Or On Run
Only If Through This Crisis, We Manage To Learn.

And Since We Are All In This Together,
We'll Have To Choose To Evolve Better!

The News Rooms Turning into Battlefields
And Majoritarianism As Their Bespoke Shields

Those Dissenting Were Reduced to Pimps and Bitches
Nationalism Was Charred With Capitalist Stiches
Mob Lynching, Corruption and Hopelessness Rode High
Economy, Healthcare, Poor Peasants Heaving A Sigh

We Began Asking The Right Questions Again,
While They Tamed Us To Neglect What Pains
Their Failed Promises Were Replaced By Truce
Facts Like Swords, Cld  Actually Cut Through
Huh! Entitled to Just Hang Our Heads in Shame
Anti-Nationals, Urban Naxals added to our Names

This Time, None of This Made Us Feel Offended
We Ensured, Our Futures Don't Lie Suspended
We Came Together And Shed Our Communal Skins
Our Slogans Held Them Accountable For Everything
From Streets To Classes, We Raised Our Voices
Our Expectations Had To Match Up Our Choices
Wisdom Was No Longer Chained To Success
And Love My Dear! Could Not Be This Mess
With Demonetisation, Beti Bachao, Bullet Trains Undressed
We As A Nation, Woke Up To Measure The Real Progress!!!
